emblem

emblem is a wearable flying device capable of autonomous flight, developed in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
Designed for use in disaster-response scenarios, it aims to rapidly deploy rescuers to affected areas and allow the device itself to return autonomously—a concept developed and refined over the course of the project.
The project spanned three years. It began when young JAXA engineers approached us about designing an experimental machine that would not only function well but also possess a compelling visual presence.
The device is equipped with three jet engines mounted on the back, yet keeps the user's hands free through a wearable foot-operated pedal system. To also function as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)—a "wearable UAV"—the machine required wings. Designing those wings and determining how they should integrate with the jet engines, became a central theme.
We explored a wide range of possibilities: foldable wings, inflatable ring-like structures that a person could stand within, and concepts that positioned jet engines around the user.
Alongside functionality and usability, intuitive beauty and styling were treated as equally important design elements.
Through repeated exchange of thoughts and images, including the intention to design something that might bring a sense of reassurance to those affected by disaster—the prototype slowly took form.
