Rami Ver.1

Rami is a functional and beautifully designed running prosthesis that takes advantage of structures unique to AM (3D printing).
Traditionally, prosthetic legs are custom-made by hand. In particular, the socket which is the part that connects the user to the prosthesis is created by molding the individual's residual limb, as the amputation site varies from person to person. Prosthetists then refine it by hand, adjusting it according to bone position and the condition of the remaining muscles. Earlier generations of the Beautiful Prosthetics project, launched at Keio University, were also handmade through close collaboration between prosthetists and designers. The accomplishments of Paralympic athlete Saki Takakuwa brought the project significant visibility; nevertheless, we were not in a position to immediately respond to the many athletes who hoped to receive a beautiful prosthesis of their own.
The project entered a new phase in 2013, when the Yamanaka Lab moved to The University of Tokyo. Under the leadership of Professor Toshiki Niino, an expert in AM, the project was selected as part of the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) with the goal of fully digitizing the production process. At the core of this shift was the development of a CAD system incorporating the expertise of prosthetists. Using CAD to efficiently design a socket that fits an individual's residual limb, combined with high-precision 3D printing, shifted the prosthetist's main role toward "design," drastically reducing the time required for fabrication. It also made it easier to produce simple test sockets for fitting checks, as well as to remake sockets to match an athlete's growth or changes in limb shape. As a result, we are now able to provide lightweight, high-performance, and beautiful prostheses to multiple athletes.
Through this work, the Beautiful Prosthetics project has expanded beyond one-off fabrication for a minority and laid the groundwork for a society shaped by mass customization.
