Ready to Crawl

Ready to Crawl is a series of walking, organism-like machines inspired by motifs such as centipedes, lizards, hermit crabs, and radiolaria, all designed to take advantage of the unique characteristics of AM (3D printing).
This group of robots has two defining features.
The first is the fully integrated output of the motion mechanism. In this project, every part of the robot—its body, legs, and all accompanying motion structures—is produced in a single selective laser sintering (SLS) print. Like a living creature being born, the robot emerges fully formed; once a motor is inserted and the switch is turned on, it immediately begins to crawl.
The second feature lies in the transmission mechanism placed along the central axis, functioning as a spine, known as the "3D cam." The rotating 3D cam has grooves directly carved into it that correspond to the walking trajectory of each leg. As the base of each leg traces its respective groove, smooth and continuous motion is generated. Phase differences are embedded into the grooves, producing the undulating gait seen in many-legged animals such as centipedes.
Ordinarily, 3D printers have significantly lower precision compared to conventional machining, which makes traditional mechanical linkages prone to excessive friction or backlash, often causing them to fail. For this reason, AM has typically been used mainly for static structures. However, we focused on the fact that movements in nature are not necessarily achieved through precise positional control. By designing a deliberately loose mechanism that generates smooth three-dimensional motion, we achieved movements with a striking sense of life.
These prototypes have opened up new possibilities for mechanism design premised on AM, drawing attention from researchers worldwide and earning numerous awards.
