Structural Tactility

Structural Tactility is a series of prototypes created to explore future applications of AM* (3D printing).
The project was carried out in collaboration with Professor Toshiki Niino of The University of Tokyo, whose research spans materials to applications within AM, and Panasonic Corporation. Typically, the tactile feel of an object is determined by the mechanical properties of its material. However, with 3D printers, it becomes possible to generate entirely different textures and tactile responses from the same material simply by designing its microstructure.
Tactility Cubes produce distinct tactile sensations depending on the direction in which it is touched.
Elastic Surface uses a special three-dimensional mesh to form an organic curved surface that deforms softly, almost like living skin.
Lizards recreates the vivid, creature-like weight one feels when holding an animal with a spine, using an anisotropic structure that is soft only in a specific direction.
Created between 2014 and 2017 through collaboration between corporate product designers and university students, these works are highly sensorial studies intended to explore the potential of 3D printers. Although somewhat improvised in nature, they succeeded in distilling and revealing the technical characteristics of 3D printing in clear and multifaceted ways. Seen today, they stand as pioneering prototypes that anticipated the emergence of technologies such as compliant mechanisms, metamaterials, and soft robotics—fields that would blossom alongside the spread of 3D printers.
*Additive manufacturing (AM) is a general term that encompasses 3D printing technologies.
