Clockoid
「Clockoid」は、株式会社デンソーの協力を得ながら制作した、時計でもあり自律機械でもある直径2メートルほどのロボット。中心軸から水平に伸びる2本のアームは、それぞれに複数の関節を持っているが、普段はそれをまっすぐに伸ばして時計の針のようにゆっくりと時を刻む。しかしときおり、文字盤に当たる巨大なリングに配置されたセンサーにより、近くにいる人の位置を検出し、インタラクティブモードに推移する。
このモードでは2本のアームが時を刻むことを放棄し、ぐにゃぐにゃと形を変えながら、探るように、あるいは威嚇するかのようにその姿を追いかけ始める。
時計としての規則的な運行と、複数の関節を余すところなく使うインタラクティブなふるまいの間を遷移する機械。アームが不意にうねるように動き始めた時の驚きは、私たちが時計という装置の存在にいつのまにか安寧を覚え、依存していたことを思い出させてくれる。

A clock is, in a sense, a display device that ideally continues to mark time regardless of human activity. This project is an attempt to give a sense of life to an object so silent and constant.
Clockoid is a robot—both a clock and an autonomous machine—approximately two meters in diameter, created in collaboration with DENSO Corporation. Two arms extend horizontally from its central axis, each composed of multiple joints; in their usual state, these arms remain straight and move slowly like clock hands, steadily keeping time. But occasionally, sensors embedded in the large ring that serves as the clock dial detect nearby people and the robot shifts into an interactive mode. In this mode, the two arms abandon their timekeeping role and begin to bend and twist, changing shape as they either reach toward the person or trail after them in a way that can even feel slightly threatening.
This machine transitions between the regular, rulebound motion of a clock and the fully jointed, expressive behavior of an interactive robot. The moment the arms suddenly begin to writhe, it sharply reminds us how accustomed and dependent we have become on the clock's steady presence.
