JIZAI ARMS

JIZAI ARMS is a wearable robotic arm system that can be attached, detached, exchanged, modified, and reconfigured.
It was developed as a collaborative research project with the ERATO Inami JIZAI Body Project, led by Professor Masahiko Inami at The University of Tokyo.
The core concept is "a body that transforms freely." This vision of jizai-ness—a state in which humans integrate seamlessly with robots and AI while maintaining a sense of body ownership—aims to expand human capabilities far beyond their natural limits. A person wearing JIZAI ARMS can move freely while retaining a sense of agency; they can even hand over the "arm" they were wearing to another person, or receive one in return.
In the future, JIZAI ARMS is expected to support and extend the human body across various tasks in everyday life. Intuitively operating a third of forth arm will likely require advanced AI technology. However, at this stage of research, we turned our attention to dance, an activity that enables humans to acquire new bodily sensations, and chose to create a version of JIZAI ARMS specifically for this purpose.
During the basic structural design phase, the designers built simple prototypes and wore them themselves to study skeletal layouts, joint placements, and other factors needed to achieve smooth movement and comfortable attachment. The control system adopts a leader–follower approach using a miniature model: an external operator and the dancer jointly create a single movement together. The design references rhythmic proportions of the human body, with the ultimate goal of producing beautiful choreography in unity with the dancer.
Inami - Monnai Lab explores future forms of bodily extension—including concepts such as a third or fourth arm or sixth finger. Our work also appears in the film Jizai (2024), directed by Maiko Endo, which emerged from ongoing dialogue with researchers of the Inami JIZAI Body Project.
