Parametric Tube

「Parametric Tube」

Parametric Tube emerged during research on soft structures fabricated with AM (3D printing).
The original prototype began as a trial in Structural Tactility as a multi-layered helical structure produced with a 3D printer to create a soft, pliable touch. It consists of multiple thin nylon springs arranged cylindrically at fixed intervals, each attached to circular plates at the top and bottom—a simple three-dimensional form. During the group's experiments, they discovered that when the upper and lower discs, where the spirals are anchored, are twisted, the cylindrical surface not only expands or contracts depending on the direction and angle of rotation, but also forms several distinct nodes.
This curious behavior of the multi-helix can be explained geometrically: the elastic deformation of the radially arranged nylon spirals, synchronizes at positions offset from the central axis, creating what appears to be a three-dimensional rotating sine wave.
In Parametric Tube, the top disc of this helical structure is slowly rotated in a reciprocating motion by a servo motor, continuously changing the wavelength and amplitude of the resulting 3D sine wave. As a result, viewers witness a strange and captivating transformation, almost as if acoustic resonance or beating patterns have been translated into a tangible, shifting form.
Born from an accidental discovery, Parametric Tube gained popularity as a piece of kinetic art. In 2018, it became the highlight of an international touring exhibition and was displayed on the façade of JAPAN HOUSE London, delighting audiences around the world.
