Biological Safety Cabinet Type Y / CO2 Incubator Type Y

In Professor Shoji Takeuchi's laboratory at the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo, researchers explore biohybrid artifacts that incorporate living animal cells—forming and assembling them while alive, and harnessing their advanced biological functions.
Members of the Yamanaka Lab spent several months in the Takeuchi Lab, learning cell culture techniques firsthand and producing various sculptural works using living cells. At the same time, they sought to redesign the research environment itself, creating beautiful and user-friendly prototypes of biosafety cabinets, incubators, and even lab coats, in collaboration with manufacturers.
Although the artificial use of living cells is still at the stage of basic research, its future applications are promising, from artificial organs and alternatives to laboratory animals in the medical field, to cultured meat production and hybrid robots powered by biological muscle cells. These prototypes invite us to imagine the future of a society where living cells function as integral components of technology.
