パナソニック（当時のブランド名はナショナル）エアコンディショナープロジェクトは、室内の空気の流れ自体をデザインして新たな快適性を追求する試みだった。壁掛け式の家庭用エアコンディショナーの直接的な冷たい風は、しばしば不快感を引き起こし、時には身体の不調を引き起こす問題は当時から指摘されていた。本プロトタイプにおいては、従来のように直接に下方に空気を吹き出す方式ではなく、部屋全体に快適な風の通路作ることを目的とした新しい仕組みが提案された。自然な存在感を演出するためにフラットな布に覆われた本体のからは、上下２方向の空気の吹き出しスリットが設けられ、壁に沿って気流が生成される、オプショナルパーツとして帆のような構造体が上方に伸び、天井に沿って室内全体に冷たい風をおだやかに誘導する。本体には照明器具が設置されており、これらの布は関節照明器具としても機能する。本プロトタイプは「新気廊」というコンセプト名の元に1999年に提案された。

Panasonic (‘National’ in Japan) Air Conditioner project was an attempt to make air conditioning more comfortable by indirect, ambient operation. Being directly downstream cold airflow often results in discomfort and may even cause sickness. The device was designed not to blow air out but to be the passageway for comforting current. Hidden behind the piece of cloth is the main component of the air conditioner that generates airflow both upward and downward, and a sail-like structure stretches above and hangs over to gently direct the flow of air into the room and further. The air conditioner was prototyped in 1999 with aluminum frame and spandex fabric for the sail.
