2001年のパナソニック・テレビ・プロジェクトは、市場がフラットなプラズマディスプレイや液晶ディスプレイに取って代わられる前の最後のブラウン管テレビとしてデザインされたものである。まだ当分はブラウン管の時代が続くと思われていた時代に、山中はこの技術の終焉を予見し、テクノロジーの幕切れを飾る記念的商品として最も美しい陰極線管テレビをデザインすることを提案した。外観デザインは、後方から前方に広がるガラスのブラウン管そのものの美しい曲線を引用し、それ以外のボリュームを最小限とするデザインが提案されている。残念ながらこのプロトタイプが製品化されることはなかった。これより4年後の2005年には、国内出荷台数において液晶テレビがブラウン管テレビを上回っている。

Panasonic Television Project in 2001 represented the last design of a cathode-ray tube television just before the market was poised to transition to flat plasma and liquid crystal displays, marking a significant technological shift. Shunji Yamanaka, having anticipated this shift ahead of many Panasonic designers and engineers, proposed creating the most aesthetically appealing cathode-ray tube television as a tribute to the technology's farewell. The exterior design drew inspiration from the graceful curve of an actual tube, which expands from the back to the front, mirroring the magnetic field's influence on the cathode ray.
