「サイクロプス」は、人間とロボットの未来の関係を探求する作品である。球体関節を重ねた背骨と空気圧駆動の人工筋肉により、このヒューマノイドロボットはなめらかに体を回転させたり屈曲させたりすることができ、生命感のある柔らかい動きを実現している。頭部には内蔵のビデオカメラがあり、人の動きに反応するようにプログラムされている。結果としてこのヒューマノイド・ロボットはただ静かに立ち、近くを歩いたり立ち止まったりする人間をひたすら目で追う。この種のロボット展示では「人々がロボットの動きを見る」のが常であるが、このプロジェクトでは「ロボットが人々の動きを観察しする」という独特の光景を実現した。
サイクロプスは、2001年に開館した日本の国立科学博物館未来館（MeSci）のオープニング記念展示「ロボットミーム」展のために制作され、その後愛知万博2005の「中部千年共生村」パビリオンの中央に設置された。また、オーストリアのArs Electronica Centerの常設展示品にも採択された。

Cyclops is an exploratory study for the future relationship between humans and robots. Thanks to special spherical joints in its spine, and artificial muscles driven by air pressure, this humanoid robot is able to gently swivel and bend its torso, giving it an uncannily lifelike move. It has a built-in video camera on head and was programmed to respond to a person’s movements. As a result Cyclops quietly stands and continuously observes humans as people walk or stop by. In this type of robot exhibition, it is common for people to watch the movements of robots. However, this project has realized a unique scene where robots observe the movements of people.
Cyclops was first commissioned by Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (MeSci) in 2001 as a part of its Robot Meme Exhibition. Then It was exhibited at Expo 2005 in Japan, also exhibited at the Ars Electronica Centre in Linz　as one of their permanent collections.
