OLYMPUS O-Product

The O-product, designed for Olympus in 1987, marked the beginning of Shunji Yamanaka's career as a freelance designer. The bold concept for this limited-edition camera was conceived by Mari Hamaguchi under the direction of Naoki Sakai, and Yamanaka brought it to life with a specific form. The central theme was the revival of 'mechanical beauty' in response to the prevailing trend of most cameras being made of black plastic at that time.
This distinctive 'future retro' appearance drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including classic metal cameras, steam engines, and Terry Gilliam's films, reflecting the diverse culture of the machine age. The aluminum housing underwent innovative manufacturing techniques, including machining, sandblasting, and polishing, following the overall presswork. This represented a pioneering challenge in manufacturing technology for that era.
The limited release of this camera created a buzz, with over 20,000 pre-orders pouring in within just one week, prompting a shift to a lottery system. The O-product became a legendary camera, with numerous celebrities purchasing it and using it at concerts and fashion events. It received numerous design awards, found its place in various museum collections, and continues to command high prices in the used market.
