Digital Camera System “Homage to the Barnack’s Leica”

2001年にパナソニックのためにデザインされたデジタルカメラとアクセサリーキットのプロトタイプ。当時、生まれたばかりのデジタルカメラ技術は、従来の35mmフィルムカメラと比べて非常に自由なデザインの可能性を有していたものの、まだレンズ交換式は普及しておらず、市場では多くの機能を詰め込んだコンパクトな製品が主流だった。それに対してこのプロジェクトは、カメラの歴史の中で初めて拡張モジュールシステムを提案したバルナックライカへのオマージュとして、デジタル時代のモジュラーシステムを提案したものである。本体はシンプルで最小限の機能を持つカメラユニットとし、フラッシュや大型ディスプレイ、光学ビューファインダー、大容量バッテリー、コネクターインタフェースなどを、それぞれに着脱可能なアドオンモジュールとしてシステム化したものである。2001の時点では製品化されなかったが、2010年以降のシステムカメラをリードする歴史的な提案だったとして、パナソニック社内で大切に保管されている。

A set of digital camera and its add-on peripherals was designed for Panasonic in 2001. The digital camera technology allowed for so much design freedom in contrast with the conventional 35mm film cameras and most designs went for integration of multiple functions in a small package that sometimes required performance compromise. Drawing inspirations from classic Leica camera system designed by Oskar Barnack in 1930’s, this set took the opposite modular approach and contains a simple minimal camera unit accompanied by separate add-on equipment such as flashbulb, large display, optical viewfinder, and Interface unit. Although not yet produced in mass quantities, The prototype of this camera was undoubtedly a proposition that led the development of digital camera systems after 2010.
