Ephyra

Ephyra is a robot installation created for the Tokyo Fiber exhibition. In this exhibition, designers, architects, and companies showcased their creative prowess by presenting novel technologies in the Japanese fiber industry.
The material I have chosen is a highly stretchable fiber known as "Raschel Seamless Ware." Both ends are stretched extensively, forming a cylinder-shaped cloth with its mouth wide open, resembling a trumpet. At its core, a mechanism is positioned to gently move 12 arms of an air cylinder back and forth. Each arm's tip is equipped with a sensor, allowing it to quickly retract when touched, akin to the movements of a snail's tentacles. Though the tentacle remains hidden for some time after, if you wait for a while, you will see it slowly emerging once again. Until someone else touches it, a graceful, gentle movement of expansion and contraction can be seen.
The term "Ephyra" refers to the final developmental phase of a jellyfish. "Ephyra" is a work that mimics the reflex behavior of primitive organisms, extracting one of the fundamental movements reminiscent of living creatures.
