自然界に時刻は存在しない。 しかし、自然を理解するためには時計が必要な時もある。 太陽の位置を知る。 歩いた時間を測る。 小さな動物たちの行動を観察、記録する。 花の開く瞬間を見極める。
知的な、自然探索のお供として
自然を深く理解するための科学的なまなざしは、腕時計という賢いお供を必要とする。 この腕時計は、「ファーブル先生へ」「博物学」「生物圏の時間」 といったキーワードをもとに、「知的な自然探索のお供として、主人とともに行動する小さな機械のしもべ」としてデザインされたものである。
人に寄り添う小さな機械として
美しさと機能、手仕事とテクノロジー、日常生活を楽しくするモノづくり。 ISSEY MIYAKEが基本とするモノづくりの考え方を、腕時計で表現したひとつのフォルム。 INSETTOは、イタリア語で「昆虫」の意味。 自然界の小さき生き物をイメージした繊細で、 暖かみあるフォルムが美しい。

Insetto (Italian for insect), originally named “Gli Orologi Sportivo,” was first designed in 1990 for Seiko Instruments Inc. as a sports watch that redefined the sports image. Inspired by insects, the Insetto not only contains design elements suggestive of insect body components but it also functions like an organism in that it contains multiple motors assigned to individual hands that coordinate intelligently to perform as a whole. Unfortunately, this design was deemed too ahead of its time and wasn't commercialized during that era. However, a decade later, it was serendipitously discovered by Mr. Issey Miyake, and driven by his strong insistence, it was brought to market as a product under the Issey Miyake brand in 2001. Today, while the Issey Miyake Watch Series has evolved into a vast product lineup with the participation of numerous renowned designers worldwide, Insetto remains the iconic inaugural model that paved the way for it.
The following is the text that accompanied the packaging of Insetto, explaining the concept behind this product:
To understand this wondrous world... Time is of no use to the natural world. We humans, however, need time to understand this wondrous world and invented the watch to measure it. The watch tells us the position of the sun, the duration of walking and the moment a flower blooms.
A watch as an intelligent agent for everyday exploration It is also an essential tool for the observation and recording of activities of small creatures. A wristwatch behaves as a clever servant that fills the demand of a scientific attitude. The INSETTO design incorporates several concepts such as Jean-Henri Fabre, natural history and the flow of time in the biosphere. The final design statement, 'A watch as an intelligent agent for everyday exploration,' clearly describes the new watch INSETTO.
A small machine to serve you The case, stem, and hands are modeled on the head, legs, and antennae of an insect. The subtle coloring extends to even the smallest details, while the carefully selected materials glow with a uniquely luminescent sparkle. Now the wonders of nature's most amazing creatures are with you always.
