弓曳き小早舟 Archer on a boat
伝統的な日本のからくり人形は通常、着物を着ていて構造を隠すことを前提に設計されている。しかし弓曳き童子の精緻な構造に感銘を受けた山中は、この構からくりを隠さないことを前提に骨格構造をデザインし直した。山中が数枚のスケッチで構造とスタイリングを提案し、実際の制作は玉屋庄兵衛の伝統的技法による手作りである。
このからくり人形は、矢台から矢を一つひとつつまみあげ、弓につがえて次々に的に向かって放つ。その自然で滑らかな動きは、童子の足元にある精密なカムが回転し「てこ棒」と呼ばれるアームが各関節に接続された糸を引っ張ることによって実現されている。特に矢を放つ直前に頭を弓に寄せる繊細な動作は、その一連の動作の中でも最も生命感に溢れる動きのひとつである。
「弓曳き小早船」は2009年に21_21 DESIGN SIGHTにて開催された「骨」展に展示された後、国内外で開催された数多くの展覧会に出品され、日本の伝統的なからくり人形の仕組みを世界に紹介する作品となっている。

This is a re-design project of a traditional Japanese automaton, based on the most famous masterpiece "Yumihiki Doji," created 150 years ago. The project is a collaboration with Shobei Tamaya, the 9th generation master of Japanese Automata, boasting a 300-year history.
Traditionally, Japanese automata wear kimonos to conceal their structures. However, we designed and crafted this piece with a naked structure, allowing you to witness its secrets.
Based on a sketch made by Shunji Yamanaka, Shobei Tamaya designed the doll’s behavior, shape, and structure using his own hands to manufacture and assemble the parts.
It’s magical movements are achieved through a precise cam structure at the base of the machine, manipulating strings attached to each joint. The doll adeptly plucks an arrow, loads it onto a bow, and repeatedly shoots at a distant target. The particularly delicate movement of its neck adds a lifelike quality to the series of actions.
After being exhibited at the 'Bones' exhibition held at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in 2009, '弓曳き小早舟 has been showcased at numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally. It has become a piece that introduces the mechanisms of traditional Japanese automata to the world.
