OnQは、スマートフォンはもちろん、ビデオを視聴できる携帯電話ですら存在しない2004年に、テレビと携帯電話をシームレスに統合する革新的なコンセプトに焦点を当てた先駆的な研究プロジェクトだった。主な目標は、メタメディアプラットフォームの基盤を築くことで、ユーザーがモバイルネットワークを介してビデオ映像やテレビ番組を視聴し、興味や話題を共有できるようにすることだった。
このビジョンを実現するために私たちが導入したのは「柔軟に再構成可能なプロトタイプ」だった。OnQは、動作をカスタマイズできるワーキングプロトタイプであり、仕様が未定の計画段階においてもさまざまなモバイル機能をシミュレーションすることができた。これを用いることで、開発者はユーザーテストと機能修正を繰り返し、基本コンセプトを段階的に洗練させることが可能になる。その結果、開発は非常にダイナミックで創造的なものとなった。この革新的なデザインアプローチ（ワーキングプロトタイプを用いたユーザービリティの洗練）は、今日のユーザー中心設計の基盤を築く上で重要な役割を果たっと言える。 OnQは2004年5月に初めて一般の方々に公開され、iFプロダクトデザイン賞2005（ドイツ）をはじめ、世界中で高い評価を受けた。

OnQ represents a pioneering research project dating back to 2004, at a time when smartphones, let alone mobile phones with the capability to view video, were yet to emerge. This project delved into the groundbreaking concept of seamlessly integrating television with mobile phones. The primary objective was to lay the foundation for a future meta-media platform that empowers users to share their interests and insights related to TV programs through mobile networks.
To accomplish this vision, we introduced the "Flexibly Reconfigurable Prototype," which was specifically tailored to the planning phase. This prototype granted us the ability to replicate diverse mobile functionalities, even in instances where specific specifications remained undefined. It enabled us to refine fundamental concepts through a series of progressive procedures, including user testing and modification.
Consequently, our planning activities became significantly more dynamic and inventive. This innovative design approach "Refining usability using a working prototype” has since become instrumental in shaping the blueprints for user-centered design.
OnQ was first introduced to the public in May 2004 and have since gained significant recognition worldwide including the 2005 iF product design award in Germany.
