Ecru, named after the French word for raw material, is a camera designed for nature enthusiasts, born in response to the growing ecological awareness of the early 1990s. It is the second limited-edition camera project from Olympus, designed in 1991 with the concept of 'kinari,' curated by Naoki Sakai. In a time dominated by film cameras but amid the swift rise of electronic devices in the camera industry, this camera emphasizes tactile qualities and textures, embodying a pure and natural essence. The symmetrically sculpted body is equipped with delicate metal components reminiscent of old tweezers and microscopes. It comes encased in a beautiful leather case with a strap. While its sales were more subdued compared to the fervor for the O-product, it still managed to sell 50,000 limited units within a few months. The camera received the Best of the Best award in the 1992 Red Dot Design Awards in Germany.
